I’m live blogging from Catalyst Conference. Catalyst is a next-generation conference that embolden leaders from all over the world. The theme of Catalyst West for 2018 is “Of Good Courage.” Jon Acuff is the New York Times Bestselling author of six books including his most recent Wall Street Journal #1 Bestseller, Finish: Give yourself the gift of done.

Fun matters. It is the great ROI of goals.

The most popular with SMART goals. Where is the fun in being specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound?

Some of you guys got into ministry and got beaten down by joy.

Does fun matter?

When you study a principle, you study satisfaction level and performance level.

  • Satisfaction – how you feel
  • Performance success – how you did

Let’s be honest, kale isn’t fun. Kale chip tastes like a regular chip if you have never tasted a regular chip. You job will have things that you don’t always enjoy.

The two types of motivation:

  1. Reward
  2. Fear

As a leader, do I need to provide approach motivation or avoidance motivation?

45% of millennials are motivated more by work/life flexibility than salary.

If you want to deliberate about this, you have to lean into this.

Fun takes courage. Cool doesn’t take any courage. Cool is a form of cowardice. Joy is expensive. We, as Christians, aren’t good at that.

Think about the prodigal son story. The father fixes the problem by having a party. We should own the market on fun.
